Auto transmissions
A car transmission (also known as vehicle transmission) are the gears in the drive train of a vehicle, which transfer the engine speed to the speed of the drive. It runs mostly as a displacement or gearbox and is required for motor vehicles, to make available to the small, useful range of internal combustion engines. If a car transmission has several input output shafts, a differential in the car transmission of the vehicle is built.
In a manual transmission, a gearbox with multiple gear sets allow different gear ratios. Furthermore, a reversal of rotation direction for the reverse gear is required. An internal combustion engine has only a predetermined direction (with a few exceptions). A vehicle must go forward but occasionally also backwards. Typically the gear wheels are at an angle where axial forces arise. To keep noise low and to transfer more torque, more teeth are required.
Today the most frequently encountered type of car transmission requires an interruption of the flow of power to change the gears. This is made possible by the clutch. It is disengaged by the driver, then the new speed inserted and engaged again.
